The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws in Canada

NORML CANADA and  LAURENCE CHERNIAK   Life Long Member Since 1980.

The principal reasons for being honoured with a Lifetime Membership was due to over 2 years service as  President of the NORML Toronto Branch. The two fantastic Be-ins at the Toronto City Hall will never be forgotten by the people who were there. More photos etc., of those two events will be posted asap.
Being Elected as the 1st President of the NORML CANADA's Toronto Branch was a direct result of opening and owning the world's 1st THE HEAD SHOP LTD. Our executive saw the National Executive had membership cards. We knew we should have them for our Toronto Chapter members as well. As President it was nice to already have my signature on my Membership Card and not have to sign it again. :) Participating as an artistic activist contributes to my life in many ways.

Above is the cover concept and art work by LAURENCE CHERNIAK of the 24 page program to promote our MARDI GRAS in 1978. All its pages and plenty photos will be posted here soon. They were great days with great people all doing our best to end prohibition. How innocent we were... and still are. Our music and songs heralded the coming of a new rennaissance period known as the Age of Aquarius.

The Age of Aquarius is still alive/young. It is past being like an infant learning to walk. Now we know the walk. Together, we will overcome this ordeal and Canada will show the rest of the world that we truly are a unique country going into the future. Let us bring smiles to our ancestors who struggled and sacrificed so that the dreams of their children would flourish and come true as well as be the envy of the rest of the world.

Let us use (not abuse or misuse) our time on this planet wisely. Let us be the very 1st to make prohibition truly obsolete. Then the way will be open to build a nation of people that can gently show and gracefully lead the rest of the world in the true lessons of what life through peace means and how valuable it is for future generations. After much traveling, I have learned many languages and seen many places where the people of older countries have become so cynical, bitter, old and put little value on life. If we go forward with a vision that is unique to us we will ensure our wonderful country continuing to be a place where people can aspire and achieve their dreams instead of being another land where many people, have grown into wasting their lives away.

Canada will truly continue to be a great nation if we keep in mind all those who lived and died for this country to be a great nation to live and have families. Since we can we should set the example in peace. By allowing each person to develop the many unique and the future is all about.

Above photo is from the previous year's, 1977, NORML D-DAY. The following year we tweaked it up and had Mardi Gras. In 1978 our Toronto chapter of NORML had the largest membership in Canada. The other members of the executive, both on the local and the national level worked very hard to raise the membership. We had some great brains working together. They included Rebeccas Shamai (an incredible lady who was one of the most resourceful, kind and loving, compassionate people, I have ever known), in fact she was known as (Inner City Angel) Paul Copeland, Clayton Ruby, Ed Brown, Andy Rapoch, Robert Bellows and John Conroy.

Others that should be mentioned are James Kyle (Kip) & The Air-Male-Female Club (Kitchener), Ted Woloshyn, Eric Amirault, Armin Darmstadt, Jim Devereux, Millie Drain, Paul James Vigna, The Musicians Union, David Goldberg (photographer), Umberto Iofirda and Terry Parker.

HIGH TIMES magazine's Thomas King Forcade (Publisher) and HIGH TIMES' Art Director Toni Brown, supported us with taking the inside front of our program for the Mardi Gras. (By that time I had contracted with them, to be their only ever INTERNATIONAL CORRESPONDENT. As well Sebastian Orfali from And/Or Press, in Berkeley, California who had contracted with me to do the first trilogy of The Great Books of Hashish took a full page ad inside the back cover.  More of my dreams were coming true.

One of the most special of the dreams coming true during that period of time was that along with the excitement of doing the demonstartions at the Toronto City Hall Square where thousands of people came out to demonstrate, while the major press and media spoke about only  few hundred turned up. In the photo above it is pretty clear there is more than only a few hundred people at the Toronto City Hall Square which, anyone who looks at the above photos can see, was packed.

The dream that I was speaking of was being able to play music at these events. That was, in many ways the height of it all. Being able to play with Paul Vigna and the rest of the band Lick'n'Stick was definitely one of the highlights of my NORML CANADA activities. That inspired me in so many creative ways. We also played together around Toronto at several of the places where he had been booked. We also made dates, for me, to come and sit in. Playing music with Paul made it all worth the tremendous amount of community service that I was happy to donate.
